Don Theison is a frustrated writer hacking fares as a cabby. His only diversion from his mundane life are the unpublished 1940's detective novel he writes. He only escapes his pathetic reality through his fictional detective -Starling. A string of savage serial murders sparks Don's imagination and his curiosity. He and his alter-ego, Starlin set out to unravel the mysterious murders. As Don investigates the slaying, his make believe world and real life become intertwined, and he gets uncomfortably close to discovering who the killer is, and the killer knows it. When veteran police detective Malkiewitz, hot on the killers trail, begins to suspect Don of the brutal murders, Don's investigative fantasies turns into a real life nightmare. As Don unwittingly frames himself for the murders, Malkiewitz's race to capture the cities most despicable killer is accelerated.
