First of all, this film is technically brilliant. The soundtrack and clastrophobic cinematography are both exemplar. Peter Greene's acting is remarkably controlled and nuanced, and steers clear of the usual excess of actors/actresses new to the realm of human aberrations.
Secondly, like many great films, "Clean, Shaven" is empathetic to the protagonists, without being sympathetic.
Thirdly, again, like many great films, it is open to different interpretations, rendering multiple "subjective" possibilities. Mine, for instance, is "Clean, Shaven" as a critique of the dark side of American Puritanism. More later, if anyone wishes to listen.
